Resumo

Furnas volcano, with four fumarolic fields, is one of the most active volcanoes in São Miguel Island. It is responsible for the daily emission of nearly one thousand tones of CO2 into the atmosphere and for a 222Rn concentration of about 6702 Bq/m3, among several other several noxious compounds. In this context and considering: 1) the lack of knowledge about the real dimension of the effects of human exposure to volcanogenic compounds; 2) that 58% of Furnas and 98% of Ribeira Quente households are built in areas of soil diffuse degassing and 3) that populations from Furnas and Ribeira Quente are permanently exposed to a volcanic environment, characterized by high concentrations of heavy metals and toxic gases, this project aims to develop scientific tools that will permit a better understanding of the relation exposure/health effects in the human population and, therefore allow a better evaluation of the risk of living in volcanic environments. This project aims to study several effects in human health that may be related to the chronic exposure to a volcanically active environment, such as carcinogenesis, pulmonary function, dental fluorosis, urinary lithiasis and endocrine disruption associated to fertility. The project framework fulfills the Regional and European guidelines for the prevention and reduction of air pollution (Regional decree 12/2009/A by transposition of the directive 2008/50/CE of the European Parliament and Council, of May 21 of 2008) for human and environmental health improvement.
