In March 2010, after an extremely rainy autumn and winter, several landslides were triggered in Santa Maria island (e.g. Maia, Panasco and Praia Formosa). One of these landslides, a slide, caused several damages in 10 buildings at Maia (Santo Espírito parish) and also to the water supply network and to the only access road to that place. The slide have about 200 m of maximum length, 150 m of maximum width and a surface area of about 18,600 m2. In order to evaluate the kinematic behaviour and the geometry of the unstable mass it was architected and implemented a permanent geodesic monitoring network. Since the beginning of the monitoring there has being observed differential displacements along the unstable mass that tends to increase from the crest to the foot of the landslide. The benchmark with the highest rate of movement presents 0.084 m and - 0.030 m of planimetric and altimetric displacement, respectively. The main objective of this monitoring network is to contribute for landslide risk mitigation at Maia.
