Resumo

On November 1998 a small seismic crisis took place W of Terceira Island, on the so-called Serreta Submarine Ridge, due to fracturing and magma injection. Fishermen first reported visible volcanic phenomena in the area on middle December. Data obtained during the first scientific missions revealed the development of a fissural basaltic eruption along a NE-SW trend, characterised by the emission of basaltic lava balloons and occasional hialoclastites. The genesis of lava balloons is related with the degassing of a very fluid and gas-rich basaltic magma during the evolution of lava fountain and/or lava lake episodes underwater.
