On the 2nd of April a volcanic eruption started at Fogo island, Cabo Verde, inside the caldera of Chã das Caldeiras. According to the inhabitants the phenomena was procede by seismic events which began at least one week before.
After a first stage of hawaiian activity the eruptive style changed to strombolian in the middie of April. Until the 18th of May, approximately 22 to 35x106 m3 of aa and pahoehoe lavas were produced covering an area of 4.3 km2
