Resumo

The Azores archipelago is located in the North Atlantic, where three lithospheric plates (Eurasian, African and North American) contact. Due to their geodynamic setting, the islands are seismically and volcanically active. Since the settlement of the Azores archipelago, several destructive earthquakes and seismic crises with a significant destructive impact have affected the region. Therefore, to protect human lives and mitigate the damages, it is crucial the existence of seismic monitoring networks to characterize and define the baselines of seismic activity at the several volcano-tectonic active systems, aiming for an early warning of any change in the activity recorded. The size and configurations of seismic networks depend on the target area, type of signals that are to be detected, telecommunications facilities, and geology of the site to deploy the equipment. In the case of volcanic islands, their size and shape also strongly influence the final design of the networks.
