​The volcanological nature of the Azores archipelago justifies the occurrence of numerous​ discharges of mineral water. These discharges immediately attracted the attention of the first settlers of the Azores, and the first references to the occurrence of thermal waters on the island of São Miguel are due to Gaspar Frutuoso (1522 – 1591). This author was an Azorean priest, graduated in Arts (1549) and in Theology (1558) from the University of Salamanca (Spain), which a few years latter got the degree of doctor from an unknown institution. Returning permanently to the Azores in 1565, Gaspar Frutuoso began writing Saudades da Terra, an extensive historical narrative on the discovery and human occupation of the islands. The manuscript is divided into six books, and particularly in the Fourth Book, one can find exhaustive descriptions of hydrothermal manifestations, which even allow to identify areas widely studied centuries later and even differentiate the typologies of occurrences.
